Celtic Cuisine

What did our ancestors eat? How did they manage their farms? How did they manage to survive the winter and avoid starvation?

Participants will learn about the evolution of diet and agriculture, try their hand at grinding grain on a stone mill, bake grain flatbreads, sample typical Celtic delicacies, and discover that salt was truly more precious than gold.

Module duration: 45 minutes

The Journey of Metals

What metals did the Celts use? How is iron extracted and processed? And how were Celtic coins used?

Participants will learn about metals and the technologies used to process them in prehistoric times. They will try their hand at iron forging and make their own Celtic coin.

Survival in Prehistoric Times

How did our ancestors manage to survive in the wilderness? What does every true prehistoric human need to know?

Participants will learn the basics of wilderness survival, including how to find water and food, and will try out various methods of starting a fire—by rubbing sticks together, using flint and steel, and with a modern fire steel.

Module duration: 45 minutes

Bees and Animals in Prehistoric Times

 What is the purpose of bees in the world? How do they live, and where does honey come from? What animals did the Celts know and use?

Participants will learn about the importance of bees in the ecosystem and gain hands-on experience with the various uses of bees and their products. The program includes a tasting and demonstration of various bee products, as well as a tour of a beehive with live bees. You’ll learn about animals from the Celtic era, and you’ll see some of them alive right here in the open-air museum.

Pottery and Ceramics

Where did pottery come from? How did our ancestors make pottery? How can ceramics be decorated?

This module introduces participants to the history of the pottery craft and its basic techniques. Participants will make a bowl and learn basic decorating techniques, such as engraving, incising, or painting with engobe.

Textiles and Clothing

What did Celtic clothing look like? Where did the fabric for their clothes come from? Weren’t our ancestors cold in the winter?

We’ll guide you through the process of making fabrics and clothing, from the very first fibers all the way to finished garments. We’ll teach you how to card wool, spin yarn, dye, weave fabric, sew and decorate garments, and make woven and felted accessories. Participants will make a bracelet or a bookmark.

Experience Prehistory

What was life like in a Celtic home? What treasures did the Celts possess? And what did a Celtic person actually look like?

Participants will visit a special exhibition in the chieftain’s house. They’ll examine Celtic jewelry, weapons, and other luxury items. There will also be a period-style dressing room where everyone can discover their inner Celtic self.

Celtic Myths and Gods

What was the Celtic religion like? How many gods did they know, and what did our ancestors believe in?

Participants will explore our new sanctuary. They’ll discover what we know about the religion and mythology of the ancient Celts, learn about the ancient gods, and make a herbal scapular for good luck.

Module duration: 45 minutes

 

Prehistoric Times Through All the Senses (for Preschool)

Discover the lives of our ancestors through play and by engaging all the senses.

Children will examine animal furs, smell herbs, taste dried fruit, create war paint, play prehistoric musical instruments, and watch a fire being started using a flint and a steel.

Module duration: 45 minutes

Self-guided tour module.

Self-guided tour module. Are you tired of guide commentary and would rather explore everything on your own? Grab our game plan and teacher’s guide, and set off on an adventure. Explore ancient crafts, architecture, religion, and—most importantly—Celtic inventions and innovations.

Module duration: 60–90 minutes

 

WINTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

In the Land of the Celts, you can journey back to prehistoric times and learn about our history—even in winter!
We’ve prepared a special school educational program for you, during which students will learn many interesting facts about the Celts, how they lived, and all the skills they possessed.
The program includes a guided tour of the open-air museum with a Celtic guide, during which students will complete worksheets. The second part is the “Touch Prehistory” module, which takes place in the warmth of the administration building, where students can use the Celtic changing room and explore ancient artifacts firsthand.

Price: 150 CZK per student
Program duration: 120 minutes
Bookings are available for dates in February and March 2026 for groups of 12 or more students.
